ReviewReviewReviewReviewBeowulf : IMAX® 3DNov 18, '07 8:17 PM
for everyone
Category:Movies
Genre: Action & Adventure
First things first... Beowulf on IMAX® 3-D is incredible. Amazing. Best 400 bucks I've spent on a movie. I watched it with my girlfriend last Friday on a regular cinema, and in IMAX with my family and friends on Sunday, and the difference is HUGE. I enjoyed the movie immenseley more on the large screen with full-length 3D effects. Complain about the story's unfaithfullness to the poem, one and a half-dimensional characters, and whatnot, but damnit, I've never been more immersed in a movie quite like this. Trusted, not because of the story but by eye-popping 3D, I didn't bother enough to nitpick the movie's lack of 300-like epicness. I was too busy trying to dodge arrows, axes, and severed heads to care. And no, I didn't read the poem in high school or watched the live-action Gerard Butler version a couple years ago, so I watched the flick with a pretty clean slate sans expectations and comparisons. Yay!

The Right
Eye Treasures
Really, this is a no-brainer in this section. This is easily the most technically profound animated feature yet. As much as a great story is essential, me (and my bro) can't help but always yearn for eye candy in these fantasy / comic movies. The movement is the only thing that gives the CGI away, but in terms of rendering, textures, and insane amount of 'little' details, such as tiny skin hairs, wrinkles, glassy eyes, the movie exceeded my expectations and is an exciting 'what could be' for future movies. Funny thing, as the animation was so real, my sis-in-law's dad who saw the movie in theaters a couple days ago thought the movie was live-action! If you're into effects, treat yourself to the IMAX 3-D experience for some full-length CG-goodness.

Remember me not as a hero, but as a man, fallible and flawed
I like how Beowulf is a complete conceited jackass. Every time he's so full of himself and proclaiming "I... Am... Beowulf"... awesome. He's definitely not your typical goody-two-shoes hero, and I thought it made him a more interesting character. You root for his heroics, but disdain his self-centered motivations. He's cocky, vain, and oozing machismo, and ultimately, more human because of his flaws.

Original Sin
Angelina Jolie. I don't think I really have to add anything, you all know about this already anyway! One thing though, her model here is much sexier than the real-life counterpart. Oh, and if they ever decide to bring Bruce Lee back to life on film, the technology might be flawless in a couple years if CG Angelina is anything to go by. Oh, and she has golden stiletto feet of DOOM!!!

Scene Transitions
I can't help but notice this small thing. The transitions from scenes were done in a nice artsy way at times, and it's worth noting. From a small rat being swooped up by an eagle to take us to a new location to a close-up of Beowulf's detailed crown to show the passage of time, it's just small things like these that add to the experience and show director Robert Zemickis' visual flare.

The Score
It's got that 300 vibe to it. And I instantly fell in love with Idina Menzel's 'A Hero Comes Home' (the end credit and the queen's harp song). Nothing too overpowering, Alan Silvestri provides a fitting score to enhance the scenes even more.

The wRong
Stunning 3D models, Bland 1.5D characterization
Aside from the main hero, we really didn't get any depth from the supporting cast. Not the spirited king Hrothgar, the stoic queen, the smarmy Unferth, and evil Angelina. They're all wonderfully rendered 3D models, but sadly, with bland one dimensional personalities that no-one gives an ounce of shit about. In fact, I felt more for Crispin Glover's fine portrayal of the tragic Grendel. He may be the most one-dimensional of them all on paper, but Glover was so good at portraying his torment with his grotesque form and hyper-hearing but with a hint of tenderness with his MILF mommy, that I actually cared about the big pussy by the time he bit the dust.

Femme-fétale
A minor gripe here. While the male models in the movie for Beowulf, Wiglaf, and Hrothgar are phenomenal, I can't help but feel indifferent to the females. Of course, they spent extra to make Angelina look life-like and uber hot, but other than her, the other female characters don't look as realistic as the males. The queen and Wulfie's 'bed warmer' have nice hair and freckles and all, but I guess the animators found it easier to make the little things in male features such as wrinkles, beards, and such more life-like.

The veRdict
If you're looking for deep characters, an epic story, and all that jazz... I dunno, go watch an indie flick or watch 300 again or something. I enjoyed the flawed protagonist and the gorgeous 3D experience too much to give a rat's ass about those things. It won't be everyone's cup of tea, but this bloke enjoyed every last sip. Don't expect LOTR, think of it like a video game even, and you'll have more fun methinks. Trust me, the thrilling final sequence involving the gold dragon made the RPG geek inside me squirm with glee. Take it for what it is, a gratuitous eye-candy-fest and just enjoy the ride! Plus, the ladies will enjoy Wulfie's bare-naked arse and we dudes have Angelina, so everyone wins in the end! haha. From someone whose seen both the theatrical and IMAX versions, do yourself a favor and catch it on IMAX 3D for an experience like no other... it probably shouldn't be seen any other way and is definitely worth every cent since full-length 3D movies are rare. Besides, for the dudes out there, you know you wanna see this in 3D:

hey! i want to see angelina's other movie... what's it called. >.< something about assassins.

but anyway, did you have to wear one of those goofy red and green glasses to watch this? sorry, haha. bano ako. i don't know whether you wear those for 3D or 4D.

last. what does MILF mean?
ryderaquino wrote on Nov 18, '07, edited on Nov 18, '07
'mr. and mrs. smith'? actually, she has a new movie out next year where she's also an assassin, 'wanted'.

and yes, we did wear those goofy glasses, but the lenses are just one color, sort of a dark red or maroon tint:

actually, since everyone in the theatre's wearin' em, you don't feel like a complete idiot, lolz. it's all good though, i swear, when the arrows were flying at us, i wasn't the only one trying to dodge them! my gal friend even tried to see if she could move wiglaf's arm that was covering beowulf's 'member', hahaha. fun, fun.

oh, and MILF stands for the rebel muslim group here in the pinas, the Moro Islamic Liberation Front... seriously though, you obviously haven't watched 'american pie', where MILF meant 'Mom I'd Like to F___'

i'll let you fill in the blanks, haha.

I loved it. Yeah, the parts between fight scenes were tedious and sleep-inducing, but the battles really woke you up. I kept flinching and holding my breath everytime Grendal took a guy out. Felt sorry for a friend of mine who slept throught the Dragon fight.

I still don't like the physics of their (Dreamworks?) CGI. Objects don't look like they relate correctly to other objects and the animation still doesn't have the blurred in-betweens needed to get away from that stiff look. Plus Faces only seem to have three expressions; sleepy indifference, constipated annoyance, and screaming rage. I'd love to see what the animators at Disney/Pixar could do with something like this.

All in all though, I'm totally tempted to watch it again in IMAX..

no ive seen mr. and mrs. smith so it's the second one. and haha ive never watched anything requiring those glasses in the theater. in one ride sa busch gardens though, we did. and ansaya! rialto + 4D haha. thanks for the info. :))
ryderaquino wrote on Nov 18, '07
yupyup, very sexy indeed, haha. do they have IMAX 3D over there? it's just so much cooler on that screen. watch it in the theater, and it's a good time, just another solid movie at the theaters. watch it in IMAX and it's an experience all on it's own.
ryderaquino wrote on Nov 18, '07, edited on Nov 18, '07
i actually thought the action was well-spaced. they needed room to breathe and story to give the action meaning, plust everything looked so pretty i didn't mind the few slow scenes. dude, the grendel scenes were so intense. in 3d it's terrifying! if i hadn't watched it in the theaters first, i would've thought grendel would jump out, grab me, and eat my head or something. and your friend missed the dragon fight? best action piece in the whole movie! that scene was one of the best of the year, imo.

it's not dreamworks, it's a warner movie, and shang-ri la or whatnot. lolz on the faces! but i guess that's more to do with the characters in the story than the technical prowess of the animators. there were some smiles during the 'merry making' segments though. it's getting there, the movement is the only thing they need to nail and it'll be perfect.

i love the animated pixar stuff, just a different type of cgi beauty, but still stylized and pretty.

dude, if you have the money, go watch it again! i know i won't! that's the most expensive single movie ticket i've spent EVER! although i watched transformers 3 times at the theatres (one was in gateway lazy-boy 300peso tix), so that's still holds the record for 'most money spent on a single movie with multiple views at the theaters', lolz.
ryderaquino wrote on Nov 18, '07
oh ok, geeze i guess angelina plays too many assassin's these days! maybe imdb can help ya out there. is there an IMAX 3D there ba? teka, napanood mo na ba 'to at all? hahaha. wala ka namang opinion sa pelikula itself!

that ride sounds sweet though! pretty natural to have that technology and turn it into a ride i guess. i haven't been to EK in a looooong time, so i'm not sure if they have that kind of thing in rialto now. 4D! i think maybe they do. ewan. haha

hahaha, omg you crack me up lyks. sorry, i guess i'm too much of a net geek. imdb stands for the internet movie database of actors, actresses, movies, basically everything under the entertainment sun. u were askin' bout angelina's movies, so here's her filmography on imdb. i dunno which one you saw though!
darthstalker wrote on Nov 19, '07
i don't think 300 was an epic, other than the cinematographical adaptation of a comic book, it was just too "braveheart" in the end.

neways, i watched it late last night with a friend of mine who has tinitus, and like halo3, it made him seasick. yes, because the eyeballs of the cgi doodads weren't in sync, for him that's bad 3D. lollers.

since i've seen the better versions of the tale, i still watched it without pre-conceptions, yes, surprise me! i was quite awed by the rendering even if it made the characters act like cardboard cutouts of an elvis presley impersonator. the cleaned-up non-gruff anglo-saxons or the vikings in general needed more cowbell. the movie does not have the pretension that it will tell a good tale, the months of hyping up it's cgi "firsts" already whetted-up the movie-goers appetites.

all in all it was a good commercial movie, which hits their goal spot-on. profit.
ryderaquino wrote on Nov 19, '07, edited on Nov 19, '07
i haven't watched braveheart! dang. do you guys have an imax 3d theater there? you're right though, the warriors needed more gruff and were too clean-cut. but i thought the models themselves were top-notch but inconsistent, like beowulf got way more pixels than his queen or even angelina. it's the movement that needs fine tuning to be perfect. mo-cap doesn't capture real life quite yet, as some movements are pretty stiff, too smooth, or just unnatural, but i think they're getting there. i dunno, overall, when i try to imagine how much hard work must've been put into making the film... each strand of hair, the perfect lighting, the glassy eyes, the tiny little micro-hairs around the cheeks and nose... i tend to view the positives more than the negatives and commend the cgi team for a job well done. nothing's perfect anyway, so might as well just enjoy what's there right?

btw, i wonder if "I... AM... BEOWULF!" can suplant "THIS... IS... SPARTA!" as line of the year, haha.
hackerzpalace wrote on Nov 19, '07
I Lolz...yeah...I watched this movie... but...It seems only watching a WARCRAFT! but...there are some weird scene though...like having so many affairs...DAMN! The story only flows to the CURSE...and I've didn't enjoy it well, but at least the graphics impress me...
ryderaquino wrote on Nov 19, '07
haha it is sorta like a souped-up video game cinematic isn't it? but it's still pretty. the curse was the main driving force in the story, but it's really self-inflicted since man must be strong to resist the temptations of lust and power. i think beowulf was able to redeem himself in the end. he no longer fought for his ego or glory, but rather, to protect those close to him and his kingdom, accepting full responsibility for his sins and making ammends by doing the right thing and finally be the self-less hero he hasn't been his whole life.
hackerzpalace wrote on Nov 19, '07
tee-hee... >.< actually...I was really shocked! When It was 3D!
It looks real though...but...the thing that caught my attention was the DRAGON! That was a real good scene!
ryderaquino wrote on Nov 19, '07
oh yes that dragon was badass! reminded me of the gold dragon from dragon quest 8. that sequence felt like a video game! from hanging onto the dragon with the axe-rope, dodging trees, jumping onto it, holding on to the back, piercing the heart... i wonder if the playstation 3 game is actually a good representation of the action there!
hackerzpalace wrote on Nov 19, '07
yep! I guess that their reasons why should it be done in 3D, because of some difficult stunts.
ryderaquino wrote on Nov 19, '07
right right. the things beowulf does are just too extreme for your average man. they would've went with cgi for the action anyway, so i guess they made the whole movie like that to compliment all the other fantasy elements like the monsters grendel, the dragon, and grendel's mom.
darthstalker wrote on Nov 19, '07
yes, we have imax but my favorite theatre is a family owned 60-seater in downtown. the most comfortable and personal experience you can get. they play reruns there and it's nice to be seated in there alone at times. yes, lol, beo has got more pix on him. one can enjoy the film if he/she removes the pre-conceived notions of how it "can" end or drop the technicals. save all that bull until the second viewing. hahahaha.
ryderaquino wrote on Nov 19, '07
hey, that sounds nice. a nice, quaint, and intimate theater. there's a cinema here that's 40 seats and all lay-z boy chairs with infinite popcorn, but it's still commercial as it's situated in a mall and probably would still feel like mcdonald's compared to that family-owned cinemas' home cookin'.

haha, it's more fun to judge and scrutinize than it is to praise and recognize ain't it? i dunno, i guess i'm just more of a glass half-full kinda guy. i do notice those flaws, it's not like i'm blind to them. it's just when the they're not as huge as what's good, i'm more forgiving, lolz.

hey joanne! yeah, i think it's the CHIN! beowulf's queen had a manlier chin than i! haha. too bad when she moved to far far away, she hooked up with another cursed king! (ribbit! hahaha)

omg, that would've been so funny if the scene where grendel was supposed to bust through the door ended up being... shrek! nyahaha

darthstalker wrote on Nov 19, '07
actually, no, not fun at all but the naughty witticism comes around even if you are objective. i blame my mother for introducing me to dorothy parker and pauline kael (although i think pauline did not understand the "tango" when she praised "the last tango in paris"). i am not a snob, i like three stooges, asswipes. lollers.
ryderaquino wrote on Nov 19, '07
cynicism or 'naughty witticism'? hahaha, c'mon, admit it... it's fun to be a smartass sometimes my friend. hehehe. but hey, having an opinion is better than apathy.

so, ru a curly or shemp fan? lolz.

nyuk nyuk nyuk nyuk. lol dada had a collection i used to watch it as a kid. no, but i could admit it up to a point, because a smartass is tiresome. you won't get to take someone home on singles weekends if you maintain and sustain the asshattery throughout the night. even oscar wilde would agree with me on that one. lollers
ryderaquino wrote on Nov 20, '07
there's always something golden about those old shows. 'i dream of genie', 'bewtiched', and my all time favorite, 'i love lucy'. i'd choose the stooges over mr. bean though, hahaha. yer right with the asshattery, i've gotten into some trouble for opening my mouth that way and i've learned my lesson.
sighs wrote on Nov 20, '07
what's this asshattery?

i looked it up on urban dictionary and it's not being defined the way it's being used here. lol. syntax error. head might explode.
ryderaquino wrote on Nov 20, '07

one who is oblivious to the world around them, lacking common sense, their head might as well be up their ass.

hypothetical question: if the lady your fawning after (like say, your lovely stumpy) was so into you one night, then in the cusp of a romp session, suddenly unveils said 'other' bush... would you still go FTW?!
